about

Fifty years ago John F. Kennedy famously proclaimed:

"All free men, wherever they may live, are citizens of Berlin, and, therefore,
as a free man, I take pride in the words 'Ich bin ein Berliner!'"

And indeed, there is many a man beyond the boundaries of (nowaday's unified) Berlin, Germany, that calls him- or herself a Berliner. For today there are more than one hundred Berlins all around the world, extending from forgotten places of barely more than three houses to ghost towns, little villages, busy cities and not least the German capital.

This blog explores these Berlins and their Berliners in all their different shades and shapes, their histories and cultures, and it is particulary interested in their links, that unfold a far more complex relation between all of them than a bare similarity in naming.

It is written by a Berliner.
